INTRODUCTION
We're building a replica de Havilland Comet 1 fuselage from scratch. In this documentary, we'll explain why we're building it and why the de Havilland Comet 1 was so important to modern commercial aviation.
DRAWINGS AND JIGS
In Episode 2 of the de Havilland Comet 1 Project, we show what some of the technical drawings look like, build the plywood jig, and start cutting metal.
SKINS, RIVETING, AND WINDOWS
In Episode 3 of the de Havilland Comet 1 Project, we skin all of the nose, called Section 1. We also build the windows and the cantilevered still stand. For the first time, Section 1 is brought outdoors into the sunlight.
FLOOR, NOSECAP, AND YOKES
In Episode 4 of the de Havilland Comet Project, we create the floor panels for Section 1, create the nose cap, fabricate the control columns and wheels, and paint the interior windscreen structure.
MOVING, KEEL PARTS, AND BULKHEADS
In Episode 5 of the de Havilland Comet 1 Project, we move Section 1 to a new home. We also transition from hand-cutting of parts to CNC-cut parts, with far greater precision. Next, we assemble the bulkheads, preparing them as the basis for the next phase of the project.
STEEL STAND, LONGERONS, AND SECTION 1 LIFT
In Episode 6, we build the steel floor stand, drill all six longerons, create the cradle to hold Section 1, and lift Section 1 onto Section 2. For the first time, Sections 1 and 2 are bolted together, and some new members join the team.
MOVING, KEEL PARTS, AND BULKHEADS
In Episode 7 of the de Havilland Comet 1 project, we build the floor beams, keel frames, and floor panels. We also install all seventeen keel stringers, prepping the keel for skinning.
RIGHT-SIDE KEEL SKINS
In Episode 8 of the de Havilland Comet 1 Project, we skin the lower keel and the right aft keel sections.
